International team of partners gathered around HILAR Project organized a third interdisciplinary workshop on the island of Rab, Quarnero region (Croatia) from June 3rd to 17th 2022.

The main goal of the workshop was to demonstrate and teach contemporary methods of cataloguing and interpreting epigraphical and sculptural heritage, a very significant source of information for our understanding of the transformations of the historical landscape.

Faced with a chronic lack of written sources, especially from the periods preceding the Late Middle Ages, researchers have to turn their attention to other methods of deciphering the past – here epigraphy and art history excel, offering insight where traditional historiography based solely on the written word cannot provide sufficient results.

The Island of Rab continues to prove to be an excellent surrounding for such scientific endeavours because of its complex history, its rich epigraphical and sculptural heritage, and the fact that the project team has been conducting its research for more than 15 years on the island.
